About Us

Our StorY

Central City Liquors has been a staple of Des Moines since 1987, with roots that go back even further. Our founder, Tom Duax, got his entrepreneurial start in 1984 with his first venture: the Maidrite at the corner of 10th and Locust. In 1987, when the State of Iowa privatized liquor sales, Tom did his research and saw an opportunity. He closed the Whirl Whip ice cream shop with a walk up window, next door to the Maidrite. This became the first location for Central City Liquors.

In 1995, a fire spurred the relocation to our current home on 2nd Avenue, where we’ve continued to grow and evolve. Today, Central City Liquors is renowned for its extensive selection, including over 170 single malt scotches, a wide range of tequilas, whiskeys, and specialty products like premium pickled garlic and spiced asparagus spears.
Family values are at the heart of our business. Tom’s son Brian manages the wholesale department, while Tom’s wife runs Creative Cutters, a successful salon in Urbandale she has owned since 1986. What we’re most proud of is the stability and endurance of the business to weather 35+ years and all the changes that came with them successfully. Central City Liquors is more than just a liquor store—it’s a family-run operation that cares about its employees and customers, offering benefits like insurance and retirement plans. With a team of 12 employees and seven delivery trucks, we’re proud to meet the needs of both retail and wholesale customers.
Whether you’re seeking a special order or looking for your favorite drink to be delivered, our commitment to quality and service has made us Des Moines’ premier destination for fine beverages. Stop by or explore our delivery options to see what makes Central City Liquors different.
